On this day we honor the moms in our lives. We honor those who gave birth to those who gave birth to us, whom we especially honor. We also honor those mothers who are espoused to us for giving and caring for our children.
It seems fitting that on this day of secular celebration of motherhood, which also falls on the sixth Sunday of Easter, that we should take time to honor Our Mother. The only mother in history conceived without sin, saved by her only Son even before her own birth.
I speak, of course, about Our Blessed Mother, Mary, ever-virgin and Queen of Heaven. It was her fiat, her decision to cooperate with God’s salvific plan for mankind that allowed the Word to become Flesh. Through her untainted womb came the Christ, Jesus.
You may wonder how the Mother of Our Lord became Our Mother. Well it was Jesus, hanging on the Cross and right before our redemption by His death, who gave His Mother to us.
When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. (John (RSV) 19:26-27)
It was this last act of Divine Mercy, Love and Generosity that gave us an Immaculate Heart to turn to for motherly love and inspiration. Mary is God’s most perfect creature and the perfect guide who reveals her Son to us. All we need do is ask.
The Angelus seems like an appropriate prayer for today.
V- The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary.
R- And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.
(HAIL MARY:) Hail Mary full of Grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death Amen.
V- Behold the handmaid of the Lord.
R- Be it done unto me according to thy word.
V- And the Word was made Flesh.
R- And dwelt among us.
V- Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God.
R- That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
LET US PRAY: Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that, we to whom the Incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an Angel, may by His Passion and Cross, be brought to the glory of His Resurrection. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
Here is a special request to Our Mother for our mothers:
Prayer to the Mother of the Lord for all mothers
Mary, on this day when we honor all mothers, we turn to you. We thank the Lord whom you serve for the great gift of motherhood. Never has it been known that anyone who sought your intercession was left unaided by grace. Dear Mother, thank you for your “Yes” to the invitation of the angel which brought heaven to earth and changed human history. You opened yourself to God’s word and the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.
Dear mother, intercede for all of our mothers. Ask your Divine Son to give them the grace of surrendered love so that they could join with you in giving their own “Fiat.” May they find daily strength to say yes to the call to the sacrificial love- the very heart of the vocation of motherhood. May their love and witness be a source of great inspiration for all of us called to follow your Son.
On this Mothers day, Mother of the Word Incarnate, pray for us who have recourse to you…
In the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
