Jesus is present in the Blessed Sacrament (John 6 for one)
1) Note how he inconsistently presumes us to be able to interp John 6 properly.
Actually, I rightly presumed that Rhology already had a heretical understanding of this chapter because Rhology, like every other Protestant, refuses to accept the reality as presented in Scripture simply because they refuse to the authority of the Church and thus refuse the authority of God (Luke 10:16). In order to deny the “Bread of Life Discourse” found in John 6 one must either be unable to read, be looking at the wrong book (or something similar) or just plain be in denial. For the purposes of clarity, let’s examine the passages:
22 On the next day the people who remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. 23 However, boats from Tiberias came near the place where they ate the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 So when the people saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus. 25 When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?”
26 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves.
27 Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of man will give to you; for on him has God the Father set his seal.”
28 Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” 30 So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see, and believe you? What work do you perform? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”
32 Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.
33 For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven, and gives life to the world.”
34 They said to him, “Lord, give us this bread always.” 35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to me shall not hunger, and he who believes in me shall never thirst.
36 But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. 37 All that the Father gives me will come to me; and him who comes to me I will not cast out.
38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me;
39 and this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up at the last day.
40 For this is the will of my Father, that every one who sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”
41 The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, “I am the bread which came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say, `I have come down from heaven’?” 43 Jesus answered them, “Do not murmur among yourselves.
44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day.
45 It is written in the prophets, `And they shall all be taught by God.’ Every one who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me.
46 Not that any one has seen the Father except him who is from God; he has seen the Father.
47 Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has eternal life.
48 I am the bread of life.
49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.
50 This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that a man may eat of it and not die.
51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live for ever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you;
54 he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.
55 For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.
56 He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.
57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me.
58 This is the bread which came down from heaven, not such as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live for ever.”
59 This he said in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum. (John (RSV) 6)
The Words of Eternal Life
60 Many of his disciples, when they heard it, said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” 61 But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at it, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? 62 Then what if you were to see the Son of man ascending where he was before?
63 It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh is of no avail; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
64 But there are some of you that do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the first who those were that did not believe, and who it was that would betray him. 65 And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.” 66 After this many of his disciples drew back and no longe
r went about with him.
67 Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also wish to go away?”
68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life; 69 and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” 70 Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil?” 71 He spoke of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was to betray him. (John (RSV) 6)
The first few verses of this excerpt begin to set the context of the Truth concerning the Real Presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. St. John begins by reminding us that the crowd gathered around Jesus because He fed them by performing the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves. This miracle is actually foreshadows the miracle of the Eucharist as Jesus begins to familiarize the people and especially His Apostles with the manner in which they are to begin to perform the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
Jesus is as contrasting the the difference between the Bread of Life versus the bread that fills bellies. He is telling the people that He did not come to become a political leader – this was a false understanding of the law and the prophets but rather, Jesus is to be the spiritual savior – the Lamb of God as St. John the Baptist exclaimed under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit at Jesus’ baptism.
The verses excerpted continue in typical fashion with Jesus getting the people to respond to His message by asking Him to prove Himself by demanding that He outdo what God did for their fathers in the desert.
It is at this point that Jesus’ tone begins to change. With love, He starts to reveal that the manna in the desert was not the true bread. He does this by equating the True Bread with it origin of heaven. And then He states that He has come down from Heaven and that HE is the BREAD OF LIFE! Jesus explicitly refers to Himself as the Bread of Life or Bread from Heaven that gives Life 9 times.
And when the Jews begin to murmur, question and doubt Jesus does not correct them. Instead He continues with this saying and drives the point home by revealing that the substance of the this Bread is not bread at all but rather it is His flesh – His body and blood. Jesus makes this explicit reference 6 times.
To make matters worse for Protestants, the Greek word recorded for eat is trogon, which literally means the physical act of gnawing or chewing. Being fluent in Spanish affords me the knowledge to draw a parallel between the Greek trogon and the Spanish tragar, which also means the physical act of swallowing or ingesting.
Next, the text records the reactions of His disciples, including the Twelve. And even amongst themselves they begin to doubt. How does Jesus respond? Not with the surely expected elaboration or clarification of His words but with a pointed question that would most certainly pierce the soul, “Do you take offense at this? Then what if you were to see the Son of man ascending where he was before (John 6:61b-62)?”
Now that He has their attention Jesus makes the sole statement clarifying His teaching, “It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh is of no avail; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life (John 6:63).” Protestants wrongly view this as the proof text that discredits the doctrine of the Real Presence because Jesus emphasizes the spirit and puts down the flesh.
The purpose of Jesus’ statement when taken in full biblical context actually refers to the sin-stained flesh of men, which of course, does not include Jesus who is True Man and True God. The second part of this verse reminds the disciples that what He is saying is True and Real – they must eat His flesh and drink His blood to have eternal life. How this would be done He would reveal at a later time but for now they must have faith in His Word.
How do the disciples react to this? They begin to walk out on Him. This shows that they knew Jesus was serious about this eating and drinking of His body and blood but did not have enough faith in Him to stick around to find out how this would be revealed to them. In contrast, Peter, the Rock upon whom Christ built His Church (Matthew 16:18) affirms His faith in Jesus while Judas, the son of perdition, remains despite his disbelief.
Protestants take Jesus’ words and react to them much like the majority of the deserting disciples did. They doubt and asking the same question, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” But instead of seeking the answer from Jesus through Peter, they follow the example of Judas and attempt to contort Jesus’ teaching on His Real Presence in the Blessed Sacrament and the need for man to eat this “bread from heaven” to something they can swallow.
But what they swallow is purely a tradition of men and an empty ritual because Protestants do not have access to the Paschal Lamb of God. And what of the Paschal Lamb? Holy Week takes place during the Jewish Passover. This is no coincidence.
Abraham’s statement in Genesis 22:8, “God will provide himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son” prefigures the Once and For All Sacrifice of Christ on the Christ. In addition to this, the Passover, a more direct prefigurement, is recorded in Exodus (1 Cor 5:7). What is most interesting and most directly supporting of the Real Presence are Passover requirements concerning the manner in which the Israelites were to sacrifice and consume this lamb. In summary:
● The lamb must be in its prime and without blemish. (Ex 12:5)
● The entire lamb must be eaten. (Ex 12:9-10, 46 cf Num 9:12)
● The bones of the lamb are not to be broken. (Ex 12:46 cf Num 9:12, Ps 34:20, Jn 16:36)
● The festival is to be perpetual. (Ex 12:14, 17, 25)
How is that God can do this without making it cannibalism? Because Christ is the One High Priest in the order of Melchizedek (Ps 110:4; Heb 5:6, 10, 6:20, 7:11, 15, 17). And what type of sacrifice did Melchizedek offer? According to Genesis 14:8, “Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was priest of God Most High.” This is exactly what happens in the unbloody re-presentation of the Sacrifice of the Mass. Every Mass, especially on the Lord’s day (Sunday) is an Easter service. (The perpetual nature of the Mass in relation to the Gentiles is prophesied in Malachi 1:11, “For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name is great among the nations, and in every place incense is offered to my name, and a pure offering; for my name is great among the nations, says the LORD of hosts.” The only pure offering is Jesus Himself.)
2) Even though John 6 has very little to do with the Eucharist.
I challenge Rhology to explain how Jesus’ own, explicit Word have nothing to do with the Eucharist.
3) And even though the Roman Eucharist is actually heretical by both our standards.
The link provided (the links provided within that post) does not show any evidence contradicting the Real Presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. All that Rhology can muster is a bunch of fallible Protestant arguments, not even based in Scripture, that demonstrate the heresy and Judas-like denial of Christ.
In these posts, Rhology wants to argue that the True Presence is heretical because Jesus’ human nature will not allow for Transubstantiation and His omnipresence in all of the Consecrated Hosts all over the world. Arguing from this position denies the clarity of John 6 and even the Divine Nature of Jesus who is True God as much as He is True Man. As Jesus said in Matthew 19:26, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
Belief in the Real Presence was a dogma of the Church since the Last Supper as Paul attests to in 1 Corinthians 11 but especially verses 27-30:
“Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself. That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died.”
If the Eucharist is a symbol, how can one be guilty of profaning the Body and Blood of Our Lord by partaking unworthily, “eat[ing] and drink[ing] judgment upon [themselves]?”
The heresy denying the Real Presence began with Zwingli sometime around 1525.
