What is the significance of Martin Luther’s split from the Catholic church?

The primary significance is that Martin Luther started a trend wherein each “Christian” effectively becomes their own pope or denomination. Luther’s protest against the Church continues, though many now prefer to call themselves Evangelicals rather than Protestants.

The lasting Lutheran legacy is one of disobedience and disdain for the authority of the Church Christ established over 2,000 years ago. This continues to separate Christians and lead many into grave error.
