Islamic Mobs Attack Orphanage, Clinic and 3 Churches

This story strikes very close to home for me. Not because I or any member of my family are from Indonesia but rather because a good friend of mine, an Indonesian Catholic, is presently there. He returned home to care for his ailing mother and it is difficult for me to imagine going through life with the thought that you remain a persecuted minority.

My friend is a very faithful Christian and though not as vocal about his Faith, the evangelism he engages in is rooted primarily in actions. This, of course, speaks volumes in comparison to mere words. On with the reblog:

Thousands of Muslims attacked three Christian churches, an orphanage, and a health-care clinic in Indonesia on February 8.

A Catholic priest was badly beaten as he sought to protect the tabernacle in his church from the marauding crowd. After damaging that church, the crowd went on to torch two nearby Protestant churches and other Church institutions.

The mob violence in Java was prompted by a court decision sentencing a Christian evangelist to 5 years in prison, rather than the death sentence, after his conviction on blasphemy charges. Richmond Bawengan Antonius had been arrested last October, charged with distributing pamphlets that mocked Islam.

The burst of violence came, ironically, as Indonesia celebrated Interfaith Harmony Week. Indonesia, which is the world’s most populous Muslim country, has an official ideology that emphasizes religious tolerance.

Archbishop Yohannes Pujasumarta of Semarang said that the violence reflected a disturbing trend, as in recent months “the intolerance of that group of fanatics has mounted.”

Anti-Catholic bigotry is the mode in Europe

Madrid, Spain, Sep 24, 2010 / 03:27 am (CNA).- Bernard-Henri Lévy, a well-known atheist associated with what is considered to be the European left, said in an interview that Catholicism is by far the most attacked religion in Europe. The prominent intellectual also noted it was unfortunate that so many injustices are committed against Benedict XVI.

“The Pope’s voice is extremely important,” Levy told Spanish newspaper ABC this week. “And we are very unjust to this Pope. I am not Catholic, but I think there is prejudice and especially major anti-clericalism that is taking on enormous proportions in Europe.”

“In France there is much talk about the desecrations of Jewish and Muslim cemeteries, but nobody knows that the tombs of Catholics are continually desecrated,” he added. “There is a sort of anti-clericalism in France that is not healthy at all. We have the right to criticize religions, but the most attacked religion today is the Catholic religion.”

Levy said he supports the construction of the mosque at Ground Zero and is opposed to the use of burkas, but he said Catholicism suffers more attacks than Islam. “Muslims are defended in the intellectual world, but Catholics much less,” he underscored.

via Prominent atheist says Catholicism is least tolerated religion in Europe :: Catholic News Agency CNA.

“Remember my word that I said to you: The servant is not greater than his master. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you: if they have kept my word, they will keep yours also.”

    John 15:20

When seeking to find the One True Church established by Christ, many often fail to recognize the parallel between the persecution of Jesus and the persecution of His Bride, the Church as prophesied in the verse above.

Since Her establishment, the Catholic Church was the subject of sometimes intense and violent persecution. The origins of this come from without just as much from within. The text from the article quoted above is another example of this although in Europe the violence is not always explicit. Yet persecution of the Church is constant no matter where from Rome to Washington, from China to Africa, from Saudi Arabia to Mexico. It is manifested with bloody violence to public subjugation.

Talk about flip-flops in Florida: Pastor at it again

By ANTONIO GONZALEZ, Associated Press GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Will he or wont he? Negotiations between a local Muslim cleric and the leader of a tiny Florida church who had threatened to publicly burn copies of Islams holy text left the heated debate in a state of confusion with the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks a day away.

The Rev. Terry Jones said Thursday he would call off the planned burning of Qurans based on a deal negotiated with the president of the Islamic Society of Central Florida that the location of a mosque planned near ground zero in New York would be changed.

But Imam Muhammad Musri said he was clear on Thursday when he told Jones that he could only set up a meeting with planners of the New York City mosque, whose leader said he had spoken to neither the pastor nor Musri. Jones responded by opening the door, if only a crack, that he would go forward with his plan on Saturday.

“We are just really shocked,” Jones said of Musri. “He clearly, clearly lied to us.”

For U.S. political leaders and Muslims around the world who have been outraged by Jones antics, the on-again, off-again threat bred even more angst and frustration.

Okay, let’s be real, it doesn’t matter if the one imam lied – Pastor Terry needs to be a man of his word (and of Christian prudence) and not burn the Qur’an. If this imam is a liar then the best and only way to make it clear to the world that he is such (plus making at attempt to redeem himself for his idiotic threats) is to “turn the other cheek” and hold steadfast.

That’s simple enough. As a bonus it’s a Biblical truth!

Burn A Qur’an Day is Cancelled (Thank God)

Photograph: Chip Litherland/Polaris/Eyevine: Terry Jones, the Florida pastor who planned to stage a Qur'an-burning protest on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks, has decided to cancel the event.

Pastor Terry Jones has cancelled his plans to burn the Qur’an on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

Jones, who heads the Dove World Outreach Centre church [Ironic name huh?] based in the university town of Gainesville, called off the book-burning after he claimed an agreement had been reached with Muslim leaders to move the controversial location of a planned Islamic cultural centre and mosque in New York.

The New York imam behind the development, however, said there was no agreement to move the mosque away from the former World Trade Centre site. Feisal Abdul Rauf said there had been no negotiations, while Manhattan real estate developer Sharif El-Gamal also denied that any talks had taken place. Gamal said the centre would go forward as planned.

I’m sure this is old news already but I just wanted to point out a couple of things. First, I felt pretty certain that this guy would eventually announce the cancellation. Second, Pastor Terry is holding a book in the picture above – any connection? Thirdly, I’m not sure I believe that he secured any deal on the proposed mosque in NYC.

And that is my real concern. While Pastor Terry has finally acted in Christian prudence, the same cannot be said about the imam in NYC. Obviously he is not Christian but prudence is prudence – and building this mosque near Ground Zero is not prudent.

I actually see this move as something just as asinine as burning the Qur’an. Not only did there appear to be a veiled threat in the interview this imam did with Soledad O’Brien, he portrays his Muslim brethren to be some sort of savages that will react violently any time something does not go their way – or at least what this imam perceives to be “their” way.

Anyway, we need to hold firm on this mosque thing because it’s not appropriate. Not at all.

Oh, and it is my understanding that some new church picked up where Pastor Terry left off and stated that they would be the ones to burn the Qur’an. Apparently this is the same Baptist church that likes to protest the arrival of our military dead – real American patriots you know.
